The Fun Hospital of Patch
When exploring film history, one can find countless examples of movies that depict the medical center as a frightening place. Taking into account movies like "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (Forman, 1975) and "Girl, Interrupted" (Mangold, 1999), it is a truly refreshing moment when a movie establishes the hospital as a space of joy and healing. As such, I would like to take a moment to applaud one of the few movies to represent the hospital as a truly helpful place - "Patch Adams" (Shadyac, 1998). a Real-Life Hero The film is based on the life of the real clown doctor, Patch Adams. Feeling that medicine had become too focused on solving illnesses instead of the actual welfare of patients - both in body and in spirit- he started the Gesundheit Institute in 1971.
